What is the best way for a small business to take credit card payments over the Internet?

I have a potential Internet customer who wants to pay by credit card, but currently I only accept payments by PayPal. I tried to contact PayPal about taking credit cards over the Internet but they won’t give me a quick, straight answer. They want a salesman to call me at work. That’s a red flag!

What is the easiest, cheapest, best way for me to use a third party to take credit card payments over the Internet?

  1. Are you a strictly online business? If you already have a merchant account that allows you to swipe a card at work, you could probably expand that to include online transactions.

    I’m a bit confused…. does this customer just not trust PayPal? If so, there are third-parties on eBay that will take credit card payment, but most customers don’t trust many people online with their credit card numbers.

    If she does use PayPal, it automatically should be set up to accept credit card payment.

  2. dont wait for the businessman to call you back
    You can take the credit card right now using paypal.

    a priemer (sp) account would be fine for right now and as your business grows worry about talking to the guy then.
    Right now ask him for his email address and just send him an invoice for his purchases.
    Explain to him that you are just starting out and he will understand that.

    later you can link your website to paypal but RIGHT now you need to make this sale before this potential customer goes someplace else.

    Explain to your customer that paypal never gives YOU the credit card number and you can make up a yahoo email that goes with your business so that he will know what it was when the statement comes.

    If you have that swipie thing at work then ask him for the number and manually enter the numbers….REMIND him of his credit card protection from the issuer so that he does not worry

  3. I’m not sure why it would set off a red flag for them to want to have a salesman to call you to explain their service, which of course you will have to pay for just as you already pay when accepting payments through PayPal. Many merchants do their CC processing through PayPal.
