What Airline Credit Card are you using?
My friend said that Alaska Airlines Visa is the best, but I want to shop around and learn from the people who use their airline credit card miles for traveling. Aside from air miles, what are the other perks? Is the annual APR worth it?
I have a Delta SkyMiles credit card with American Express as well as a United Airlines VISA card. What is cool with the United Airlines mileage program is that if you don’t use them for travel (so hard to find a free flight nowadays. Have to book almost a year in advance to some destinations), you can use your airline miles and bid on things. My friend used his United Airline miles to bid (and won) a round of golf at Pebble Beach. There are other things you can bid on such as trying their flight simulators. The winning bid gets to go into the same flight simulators United Airline pilots train in. But for these things, you have to have a lot of miles. Sometimes you can cash your miles in for magazine subscriptions.
Unless you use the card a lot, the annual fee may not be worth it. United charges at least $60 a year. Delta is running a special on their AMEX card that after your first purchase you receive 10,000 or 15,000 SkyMiles. I think the first year is free but after wards the annual fee on the card is $85.
Since there are so many people with frequent flyer miles out there and it being so hard to find a free flight, I choose a credit card that gives me money back on my purchases.
I’ve heard that you need a lot of miles if you want to redeem a free flight with American Express.
Give Capital One a try. I have never used it, but i heard its pretty easy to redeem with them. You can also give Chase United Mileage plus a try.
i just join the airlines flyer programs instead of the cards and us my banks reward card. it does any airline and offers many option and lowest apr
The American Express Blue Sky card is a great card. You earn 1.33% on all spending ($100 for $7500 spent). And your earnings can be used on *all* airlines, all hotels, all vehicle renters, all cruse lines, etc.
As with all rewards cards, your strategy should be to funnel your normal spending through your card(s) and pay off your balance in full every month. That way you’ll build your credit, avoid interest, and earn rewards.
To find the rewards card that will pay you the most for your normal spending, you can use this rewards calculator:
That calculator converts all reward currencies (points, miles, cash) into dollars so you can do an apples-to-applies comparison. You might actually do better with a cash back card like Chase Freedom or AmEx Blue Cash. And, of course, cash can be used for travel or anything else your heart desires.
