Got a HSBC Platinum Mastercard credit card 2 weeks ago, then got offer for an awesome Discover card thru HSBC?

Even though they are the same bank can I open another account with Discover HSBC? I would like to keep both for building credit but the Discover is a much better deal.

How can a credit card be useful to a student? And what are the cons?

My new HSBC student account comes with a student credit card but I don’t really understand why I would need one so I haven’t activated it - isn’t it only going to put me in debt?
