At some gas stations, they have limits for credit cards. The only reason is that Visa & Mastercard charge 3% of what your total sale is to the gas station that you’re purchasing from. American Express charges 4%, and that’s why most places don’t accept AX. I don’t remember the percentages on other cards.
Some gas stations don’t have a limit. When you are outside pumping, if that gas station does have a limit, they will have a sign on the pump. I’ve seen it before, but seldomly.
I never really thought of it but it makes sense if its $50.
Think about it, it doesnt preaccept a set amount before purchase so you could run up over your limit of your credit card. Most likely you will fill up before you hit your credit limit though. Its unlike purchasing goods, you get the total, they run the card and it accepts or declines. The machine is accepting before knowing how much you are going to charge.
ed9455 - Im sure truck stops have a different system since semis take alot more gas at a time. Preapprove limit may be much higher.
Yes there is a limit. It varies by company. When your card is authorized at the pump, they have no way of knowing how much you’ll need, so they pre-authorize a certain amount. If you hit that limit, they’ll stop the pump and you’ll have to do a second transaction and second pumping to continue.
$50 is obviously not the limit today because I’ve used 3 different cards to fill my car and I’ve gone over that amount several times.
Before oil prices went sky high, most limits were at $75. I betcha that went up to $100 or more.
It depends on the station, but no it costs that much to partly fill up a pick-up these days. Some gas credit cards make you give the card inside and they can ok more fuel.
I dont think thats true I think some people are confused
as when you use a credit card they pre authorized $50.00
on the card thats probably where people are getting this from
but if you go under say you only spent 30, the other 20 will fall
off after a day or so,
(its same thing car rental and hotels do)
Safeway (AZ) limits gas purchases to $100. This is intended to cut losses if the card is misused. It’s a choice of the station to set the limit, if any.
This is separate and different than when a ‘hold’ is placed on your funds at the bank. You can buy $1 worth of gas and have a $50 hold placed on your account until the transaction is closed (3-5 business days). Banks love this as it can generate an overdraft fee on marginal balance accounts.
Yeah, it is. Most credit cards will cap you at $50. Why, I don’t know.
not at all of them
