mastercard credit card

All I want to do is close my Mastercard account. I called MC and the idiot told me that I would have to write a letter. This cannot be accurate. Does Mastercard have a website or this support agent the “B squad” and mistaken on procedure?

  1. You might as well write a letter. I’ve heard other people say that a letter is required.

  2. Look at your statement or the back of your card. You should be able to do it on the phone or online.

  3. The credit card companies try to make it hard to close an account. Usually you can do it by phone. I would ask to talk to the idiot’s supervisor. It’s possible that you will have to write a letter. The credit card companies make up their own stupid rules, and that’s one of the problems with credit card companies. I’m pretty sure that you can’t close your account by website.

I have succeeded in closing an account by phone, but every company is different.

  4. Some companies allow you to cancel the credit card over the phone, some require written notification. Mastercard does not set the rules here, the individual bank issuing the card sets the policy. It’s in the fine print they send you when you first get the card; by signing the back of the card, you’re agreeing to all those rules. But no one ever reads them.

  5. Call the number on the back of the card or customer service on your statement. Good luck.

  6. Get ready for this…If you do it by mail, you will never get it closed..I personally tried to close one, called and got the balance, sent a check. The next month I got a bill for just under $10. When I called I was told that the interest was added on the balance from the time I called, sent the check and they posted it. Problem is that if I sent them the $10 dollars I would still owe interest the next month and so on and so on. The only way to close it was to pay by another credit card and it would be closed then and there. Problem with that is there is a $14 charge for doing it on the phone. Go figure.

  7. It really depends on the bank. Bank of America, Wells Fargo, WaMu, Citi, etc…I know with Citi you can close it over the phone. Ask for a supervisor as soon as you get on the phone and then just ask a supervisor to close the account. They should be able to do it, but again. it depends on the bank, not Mastercard.

And actually, for the guy above, credit card companies are able to waive the pay by phone fee. All you have to do is ask. It’s 14.95 right?? Just say, ‘can you please waive that, I just want to pay this card off’
I work for a credit card company and we do this **** ll the time! ; )
