can my brother close his checking account when he owes the bank in credit card bills?
My brother has opened a checking account with bank of america. But he also have a credit card with bank of america. He pays his credit card bills with money order. He still owes them some money. So my question is… can he still close his checking account even though he owes some money to the bank?
as long as his checking account isn’t in the negative it should be fine. The credit card is different than a bank account.
He can close that account but they will keep his credit card on the books until he pays it off. Most accounts also have a parallel savings account associated with it.
Leaving B of A is a smart move. Have him check into other offers that may have lower rates if he transfers the balance over to the other card. I think bankrate.com may be of some help. Personally, I favor credit unions.
Yes he can close his account with B of A as long as he continues to pay visa/mastercard/etc their money. The bank is not responsible for a credit card. It may be issued through the bank, but the bank does not have any record of it. Only the card company does. Some banks/credit unions work closer with card companies than others and offer more. Not sure about B of A. But as long as his account is positive and nothing is going to come through on it he can close it.
